Emeritus professor of “Anthropology of Indonesia” at Leiden University, Reimar Schefold, displays the riches and customs of the Mentawai in a beautiful publication. Mentawai is an indigenous tribe that inhabits the archipelago of the same name, about 100 kilometers off the coast of West Sumatra. Schefold himself lived on the archipelago for many years, conducted extensive field research and collected art. The Mentawai believe in an animated world: not only people and animals but also plants and utensils are animated.
